Glomus Tympanicum in an Asymptomatic 82-Year-Old Woman.

In an 82-year-old woman with an incidentally discovered 3–4 mm Glasscock-Jackson type I glomus tympanicum of the right middle ear, five years of watchful waiting with serial clinical assessments and imaging demonstrated complete tumor stability, no significant growth, and no development of otologic symptoms, avoiding any surgical or radiotherapeutic intervention. Glomus tympanicum is a rare, highly vascular paraganglioma that typically presents with pulsatile tinnitus and hearing loss, yet this patient — who exhibited only mild to moderate right-sided sensorineural hearing loss on audiometry — remained fully asymptomatic throughout the entire follow-up period. The case supports conservative surveillance as a viable and appropriate management strategy for select older, asymptomatic patients harboring small, slow-growing tumors of this type.

A woman in her early 50s with a prior history of sinonasal inverted papilloma excisions 3 and 5 years earlier was diagnosed with a rare synchronous dual malignancy: sinonasal basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) and a contralateral temporal bone non-keratinising squamous cell carcinoma, both with intracranial and orbital involvement. Surgical resection of the sinonasal tumour and biopsy of the temporal bone lesion confirmed the two distinct histological diagnoses, and despite planned adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, the patient suffered rapid recurrence and died within 3 months. This case illustrates the malignant transformation potential of inverted papilloma, the exceptionally aggressive behaviour of BSCC, and the essential role of comprehensive histopathological workup and multidisciplinary management when sinonasal and temporal bone malignancies co-occur.

Veterinary pathologists have documented a rare case of tympanic papillary adenoma in a 9-year-old cat, a tumor type with no direct equivalent in human pathology, which recurred within 17 months of surgical removal. The primary tumor was characterized histologically by papillary structures lined with a single layer of ciliated cylindrical cells, minimal atypia, a very low mitotic count, and a Ki67 proliferation index of 10.4. Upon recurrence, the tumor demonstrated increased biological aggressiveness, with a higher mitotic count and an elevated Ki67 index of 18.6, suggesting progressive malignant potential. This case highlights the importance of histological examination and long-term follow-up for this exceptionally rare ear canal neoplasm in cats.
