Therapeutic device as a facilitating resource for esophageal voice acquisition.

A novel catheter-based esophageal stimulation device enabled 60% (9 of 15) of total laryngectomized patients who had previously failed conventional speech-language therapy to develop functional esophageal voice for communication, while the remaining 40% (6 of 15) achieved esophageal sound production. The device consisted of a 50 cm catheter introduced nasally to the pharyngoesophageal segment and fixed at the tracheostoma, used over 12 consecutive weekly sessions. Although auditory-perceptual evaluation showed no statistically significant differences between pre- and post-intervention assessments, participants' self-assessment questionnaires indicated a perceived improvement in vocal quality. These findings suggest the device represents a feasible rehabilitative option for laryngectomized patients refractory to standard esophageal voice therapy.

Vestibular schwannoma surgery with cochlear implantation under continuous monitoring using the auditory nerve testing system: Three cases with distinct clinical scenarios.

A study of three patients demonstrates that the Auditory Nerve Test System (ANTS) can reliably provide continuous intraoperative monitoring of acoustic nerve preservation during simultaneous vestibular schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation, with all three patients achieving successful hearing compensation postoperatively. The cases included distinct clinical scenarios: one patient with neurofibromatosis type 2, one with a medium-sized vestibular schwannoma and contralateral long-term idiopathic hearing loss, and one with a small vestibular schwannoma and bilateral mitochondrial hearing loss. In each case, continuous electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses were successfully recorded throughout tumor resection, guiding the decision to proceed with ipsilateral cochlear implantation immediately after surgery. These findings expand the documented clinical evidence for ANTS-guided monitoring and support its broader adoption in combined vestibular schwannoma and cochlear implant procedures.

Diagnostic accuracy of miRNA in detection of upper aerodigestive tract malignancies: a protocol for systematic review.

Researchers have registered a systematic review protocol to rigorously evaluate how accurately microRNAs (miRNAs) can detect cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract — including the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx — using minimally invasive biological fluid samples. Although individual studies have shown promise for miRNA-based diagnostics, their reported performance remains inconsistent, prompting the need for a comprehensive evidence synthesis. The review will search four major databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase) from inception, apply PRISMA-DTA reporting standards, and use a hierarchical bivariate random-effects (Reitsma) model to pool sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, and diagnostic odds ratios at 95% confidence intervals. If successful, the findings could clarify whether miRNA assays are ready for clinical use and guide earlier, less invasive diagnosis of these often late-detected cancers.
