Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) destroys cancer and precancerous cells with a drug that is activated by light. The photosensitizer builds up in abnormal cells, and light of a specific wavelength then triggers a reaction that produces a cell-killing form of oxygen. In the United States, PDT is approved for several skin cancers and precancers, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, esophageal cancer, Barrett esophagus, and non-small cell lung cancer; because light reaches only about 1 cm into tissue, it is limited to the skin and the lining of internal organs.
How it works
Used in
Barrett oesophagus and oesophageal cancer; also used palliatively when the tumour obstructs the oesophagus and impairs swallowing.
Non-small cell lung cancer, including palliative use when the tumour obstructs the airways.
Registered skin indications: actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma and stage 0 squamous cell carcinoma — superficial lesions the light can reach.
Advanced cutaneous T-cell lymphoma — one of the registered indications for this method.
