No Survival Benefit With Mastectomy in Younger, High-Risk Breast Cancer

A prospective study has found that mastectomy does not significantly improve survival outcomes compared with less aggressive surgery in younger women with high-risk locoregionally advanced breast cancer. Despite mastectomy being the predominant surgical approach in this age group, the data suggest the more radical procedure offers no meaningful survival advantage. The findings challenge current clinical practice patterns and may prompt re-evaluation of surgical decision-making for younger patients with advanced locoregional disease. These results underscore the importance of evidence-based, individualized treatment planning rather than defaulting to the most aggressive surgical option.
