Results From the Genetic Information and Family Testing Study: A Cluster-Randomized Trial

★ 5.5 / 10 Journal of Clinical Oncology

The Journal of Clinical Oncology has published results from the GIFT (Genetic Information and Family Testing) Study, a cluster-randomized trial evaluating strategies to improve cascade genetic testing among relatives of patients with hereditary cancer predisposition. Cascade testing — systematically offering genetic evaluation to at-risk family members after a pathogenic variant is identified in a proband — remains substantially underutilized despite its proven value in cancer prevention and early detection. The trial assessed whether structured interventions at the family-cluster level can increase uptake of genetic testing and inform better screening and risk-reduction decisions. These findings are relevant to public health efforts aimed at closing the gap between identification of hereditary cancer syndromes and actionable follow-up among at-risk populations.
