[Articles] Substantial increases in cervical cancer inequalities worldwide without enhanced human papillomavirus vaccination and screening efforts: a global modelling study
A large-scale global modelling study published in The Lancet projects that worldwide inequalities in cervical cancer incidence and mortality will increase dramatically unless HPV vaccination and screening efforts are substantially enhanced. The researchers found that achieving the WHO elimination targets for vaccination and screening coverage, or introducing universal HPV vaccination with high uptake, is essential to eliminating cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries. Without these interventions, the burden of cervical cancer will remain disproportionately concentrated in LMICs, widening the gap with high-income nations. The findings underscore the urgency of global investment in HPV prevention infrastructure to achieve health equity in cancer outcomes.
