Cumulative Hematologic Morbidity and Outcomes in Shwachman–Diamond Syndrome

A NEJM report quantifies the cumulative burden of blood disorders in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a rare inherited bone marrow failure syndrome that strongly predisposes to myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukaemia. The analysis describes how often patients progress from cytopenias to clonal myeloid disease over long-term follow-up and how this progression affects survival. Such longitudinal data inform how closely these patients should be monitored with marrow surveillance and when pre-emptive stem-cell transplantation should be considered.
