The FDA approved aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride 10% (Ameluz) combined with photodynamic therapy for the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma in adults, marking a new non-surgical option for the most common form of skin cancer. The approval, announced by manufacturer Biofrontera, expands the drug’s existing indications to include this prevalent malignancy. Photodynamic therapy uses a light-activated topical agent to selectively destroy cancer cells, offering an alternative to excision particularly for patients with lesions in cosmetically sensitive areas.
