Nonsurgical Options for Early Rectal Cancer Continue to Show Promise

Nearly 80% of patients with early-stage rectal cancer remained surgery-free for at least one year after chemoradiation therapy (CRT) in a large randomized study of 341 patients who opted against upfront surgery. These results strengthen the evidence for organ-preservation strategies — watch-and-wait approaches following complete clinical response to CRT — as viable alternatives to total mesorectal excision. The randomized design and substantial cohort size lend significant weight to the growing body of data supporting non-operative management in selected early rectal cancer patients.
