ACOG Strengthens Support for Fallopian Tube Removal to Prevent Ovarian Cancer

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now recommends routine fallopian tube removal during hysterectomy and opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy (OBS) during other surgical procedures as a cancer prevention strategy. The updated clinical practice guidance strengthens prior recommendations based on growing evidence that the majority of high-grade serous ovarian cancers originate in the fallopian tubes. This represents a significant shift in gynecologic surgical practice aimed at reducing incidence of ovarian cancer, which remains difficult to detect early and has high mortality.
