Hypo- Versus Standard Fractionated Locoregional Radiotherapy of Patients With High-Risk Breast Cancer in the Randomized Phase III Trial: The Danish Breast Cancer Group Skagen Trial 1

The phase III randomized Skagen Trial 1 demonstrated that hypofractionated locoregional radiotherapy is a viable alternative to standard fractionation in high-risk breast cancer patients requiring regional nodal irradiation. The Danish Breast Cancer Group trial enrolled patients with node-positive or other high-risk features and compared a shorter course of radiation against the conventional fractionation schedule. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, these results support reducing treatment burden by shortening the overall radiotherapy course without compromising oncological outcomes. The findings are expected to influence international guidelines on radiotherapy fractionation for patients with locoregionally advanced breast cancer.
