Virtual Sustained Tobacco Treatment for Patients With Cancer: A Randomized Controlled Trial (ECOG-ACRIN: EAQ171CD) Within the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program

A multicenter randomized controlled trial (ECOG-ACRIN EAQ171CD) conducted within the NCI Community Oncology Research Program evaluated a virtual sustained tobacco treatment intervention for cancer patients who smoke. The study, enrolling patients across community oncology sites, tested whether ongoing virtual counseling and pharmacotherapy support improves long-term smoking cessation rates compared to standard care. The trial addresses a critical gap in oncology supportive care, as continued tobacco use after a cancer diagnosis worsens treatment outcomes and increases mortality.
