Stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastases from male breast cancer: a multicenter retrospective study.

A multicenter retrospective study of 19 male breast cancer patients with 185 brain metastases treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) achieved an exceptionally high crude local control rate of 97.3% and a median overall survival of 28.0 months. Patients with controlled systemic disease at the time of SRS survived significantly longer than those without (40.0 vs. 22.0 months; p = 0.032), identifying systemic disease status as the primary determinant of survival. Neurological symptom burden fell markedly after SRS (from 63.2% to 26.3%; p = 0.016), and target volume — with an optimal threshold of 0.98 cc on ROC analysis — was the principal dosimetric predictor of both local failure and radiation toxicity. These results support applying established SRS practice parameters to this exceptionally rare patient population.

A qualitative synthesis of 16 studies on male breast cancer (MBC) patients identified four core themes: significant stress following diagnosis, emotional changes throughout the disease course, diverse coping strategies, and active self-reconstruction after illness. The review, drawing on databases including PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL for studies published up to June 2025, highlights that MBC survivors face compounded challenges across informational, physical, mental health, and financial domains — areas that remain understudied compared to female breast cancer. The authors call for multistakeholder collaboration to design multifaceted support programs aimed at reducing mortality, improving cure rates, and enhancing quality of life for MBC survivors.

The burden of male breast cancer (MBC) is rising across Europe, with the most striking increase observed in Central Europe, where the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) nearly doubled from 0.54 (0.40–0.76) to 1.05 (0.70–1.52) per 100,000 between 1990 and 2023. Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2023, researchers found marked regional divergence: Eastern Europe showed a decline in age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) from 0.40 to 0.21 and in disability-adjusted life-year rates (ASDR) from 10.54 to 5.55, while Western Europe saw rising incidence (ASIR 0.47 to 0.88) with broadly stable mortality (ASMR 0.22 vs. 0.24). Crucially, the mortality-to-incidence ratio declined markedly across all three regions, signaling improved treatment outcomes, yet the overall upward incidence trend underscores that MBC remains a seriously underrepresented and growing public health challenge for men in Europe.
